hidden half-lap joint

The hidden half-lap joint is used as a house threshold corner connection, often with a pole on top of the connection, in European wood working. For this l-connection the beams are connected horizontally at the corner. The end of the beams are notched 5/6 of the width and half the height. At the end it is covered by a mitre which protects the end-grain of the beam from soaking up water and water inclusions in the wide horizontal jointing. (cf. Das verdeckte Eckblatt wird als Schwelleneckverbindung im europäischen Holzbau genutzt, auf der meistens ein Posten platziert wird. Für diese L-Verbindung werden die beiden Balken waagerecht an der Ecke verbunden. Dafür werden die Balken am Ende auf 5/6 der Breite und der halben Höhe ausgeklingt. Die Ausklinkung wird an der Eckaußenseite von einer Gehrung verdeckt. Die Gehrung verdeckt das Hirnholz der Balken und schützt es vor Feuchteschäden, da die flächig waagerechte Fuge anfällig für Wassereinlagerungen ist.
