The mitre joint protects one side of the end grain with its geometric joint. The joint follows a simple rule of thirds and a 45 degree angle. Since the joint is not secured by a wedge or a split pin, it is usually glued. It is more commonly used in furniture making by carpenters. In glued form, pressure and shear loads can be transferred well. (cf. Gerner, 1992, p. 64) Sheet piling is often used for board-like components, for example for door, wall, floor or ceiling coverings. In addition to wood, it is also used in insulation boards (windproof joints) or concrete bricks and prefabricated reinforced concrete elements.

Die Gehrungsverbindung schützt durch ihre geometrische Fügung eine Seite des Hirnholzes. Die Verbindung folgt einer einfachen Drittelungsregel und einem 45 Grad Winkel. Da die Verbindung nicht durch eine Verkeilung oder einem Splint gesichert ist, wird sie meistens verleimt. Sie kommt eher im Möbelbau bei den Tischlern zum Einsatz. In verleimter Form lassen sich Druck- und Scherlasten gut abtragen. (vgl. Gerner, 1992, S. 64) Die Spundung wird oft für brettartige Bauteile verwendet, zum Beispiel bei Türen-, Wänden-, Böden- oder Deckenbelägen. Sie findet neben Holz auch Verwendung in Dämmplatten (winddichte Verbindungsstellen) oder Betonziegel und Stahlbetonfertigteilen.
